El Porto Beach in Manhattan Beach offers a quintessential Southern California backdrop for romantic and timeless couples, engagement, and maternity photo shoots. While its vast sandy shores and iconic pier views are undeniably stunning, knowing a few insider tips can elevate your photoshoot from lovely to absolutely breathtaking.

One of our top tips for couples seeking a more intimate experience is to avoid parking directly at the main El Porto beach entrance. This area, while beautiful, experiences high foot traffic, especially on weekends and during peak season.
Instead, we recommend heading a little further south, towards the charming stretch nestled between the pier and the main El Porto entrance. Here, you’ll discover a more secluded and serene atmosphere. Look for the convenient park and stairs that offer easy parking and direct beach access. This hidden gem provides the perfect blend of picturesque beach scenery with a touch of privacy, allowing you to relax and truly connect during your session.

El Porto Beach truly shines at certain times of the year, offering diverse moods and conditions for your photos:
Spring (March – May): Our absolute favorite! The weather is typically mild and pleasant, with fewer crowds than in the summer. The soft, diffused light during this time is absolutely magical, perfect for capturing those tender, romantic moments. You’ll avoid the intense summer heat while still enjoying abundant sunshine.
Fall (September – November): Another fantastic option! As the summer crowds dissipate, El Porto regains a quieter charm. The sunsets are often spectacular, painting the sky with warm hues that create a dramatic and romantic ambiance. The cooler temperatures make for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Winter (December – February): For a truly unique and dramatic feel, consider a winter photoshoot. While it might be a bit cooler, the beach often feels wonderfully deserted, offering a raw and intimate backdrop. Overcast days can provide beautiful soft light, perfect for moody and artistic portraits.
Summer (June – August): While the sunsets are undeniably stunning, and it can feel like some of the best weather and nightlife around to follow, summer brings with it significantly more crowds. If you’re set on a summer shoot, we recommend weekdays and aiming for very early mornings or late evenings to minimize the feeling of “the spotlight effect” during your session with us!

While the beach itself is undeniably captivating, El Porto and its surrounding areas offer even more photographic variety:
The Strand Bike Path: Running parallel to the beach, the iconic Strand offers a dynamic and fun element to your photoshoot. Imagine yourselves strolling hand-in-hand, biking, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze with the path as your backdrop. This is a great way to add a more active and playful dimension to your gallery.
Charming Neighborhood Streets: Just a few blocks inland, the residential streets around El Porto boast beautiful architecture, lush greenery, and quintessential Southern California charm. These areas can provide a lovely contrast to the beach, offering a mix of urban sophistication and coastal tranquility. Consider starting your session in the neighborhood for some lifestyle shots before heading to the beach for sunset.
El Porto Beach offers an unparalleled setting for capturing your love story. With a little planning and these insider tips, you’re guaranteed a collection of images that are not only beautiful but truly reflect the magic of your connection.
