Hello, beautiful souls! First and foremost, congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting time in your lives, filled with love and anticipation for what’s ahead. As a professional wedding photographer who specializes in documentary-style photography, my passion is to capture those authentic moments that tell your unique love story. Today, I want to dive into the ins and outs of preparing for your engagement session in the stunning Joshua Tree National Park.
Joshua Tree is a magical place that offers breathtaking landscapes — from iconic Joshua trees and boulders to expansive desert skies. If you’re dreaming of a session that feels true-to-life and true-to-color, this is an amazing choice. Let’s explore the best practices for what I like to call your “pre-wedding adventure.”
Though Joshua Tree is enchanting in it’s own ways year-round, but certain times of the year are particularly the best for photo shoots.
For those perfect desert vibes without the oppressive heat or unexpected dust storms, I’d recommend planning your engagement session in February, March, or April. During these months, temperatures are more mild during the day, and the wildflowers often bloom, adding a splash of color to your shots. at night, it can drop in temperature around sunset into the 50’s or 40’s, but it beats any heat wave!
Keep in mind, however, that weekends can be quite popular- so I suggest booking your session on a weekday for a more serene experience if avoiding the spotlight effect is top of mind for you.
Plus, it will give us a bit more room to play and explore the park without the crowds!
Now, let’s talk about how to style your outfits for the session. The attire you choose can significantly influence the overall vibe of your photos.
For a soft, brighter, romantic look: I recommend lighter colors that harmonize with the desert scenery. Think whites, creams, beiges, and other natural tones. These shades capture the essence of the warm Southern California sun beautifully.
For more dramatic, high-contrast, moodier aesthetic: On the flip side, deep hues like terra cotta, blacks, wines, deep plums, or rich olive greens can create that stunning contrast against the soft desert backdrop.
When in doubt, bring options with you + go with the colors of the elements: Different shades and hues of tan, beige, terra cotta, sage green, etc. Colors that blend with the desert environment brings a lot fo harmony to photos, and allows your connection as a couple to stand out most!
If you’re truly in a toss up, bring different outfit options on hangers, pre-steamed, in your car’s backseeat, and I can give you my professional POV when I see you at the start of the session!
Meet at a Cute, Cozy Third-Party Location with Cell Service
Before we dive into the gorgeous landscapes of Joshua Tree, I like to connect with my couples over coffee or brunch at a charming spot in Yucca Valley or Pioneertown, one of the last few places that has guaranteed service before heading out to the park entrance. It also serves as a fun, safe way to get to know each other if we haven’t met in person yet, by being at a third-party location.
This personal meet-up gives us the chance to chat, get to know each other, and for you to share your story and thoughts. It’s also a great way to ease any pre-photo jitters. As you approach Joshua Tree National Park, be aware that cell service can be spotty or non-existent. That’s why I highly recommend entering through the **West Entrance**. This entrance is not only the most scenic but also provides easy access to some of the best photo opportunities.
Now, here’s hands down the most IMPORTANT part: I want you both to enjoy this experience fully, and not have any logistical hiccups when it comes to meeting up with your photographer!
Navigation & Directions
**Directions to the West Entrance**
– From Los Angeles: Take I-10 E and merge onto CA-62 E. Continue on 62 until you reach Joshua Tree. Look for the West Entrance signs!
– From San Diego: Take I-15 N to I-215 N. Merge onto I-10 E and follow the same directions as above.
Make sure to check out the park’s official website ( or copy https://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/index.htm to your web browser) for any updates on accessibility and entrance fees to gett extra prepared!
Park Entry Fees (as of the time of posting this blog post):
Speaking of which, to enter the park, you’ll need an access pass which lasts for **seven days** and costs **$30 per vehicle** (that’s their most affordable option for your engagement session/ day). This fee contributes to the maintenance of this beautiful national treasure and helps keep it looking pristine for all visitors, of course!
Did you know there’s a psychological phenomenon called “the Spotlight Effect”? It refers to the feeling that everyone is paying attention to you when you’re being photographed. My role is to help you forget about the world around you.
At first, I’ll coach you two with light prompting and guidance. I find that 90% of my couples want that direction as they get used to a camera being near them, and then we ease into more interactive prompts that allow you two to be more interative with ech other for more of those documentary-style captures.
That way, there’s way less pressure, and less focus on “performing” for the camera! Instead, you focus on loving looks, laughter, and those sweet little moments focused on each other- that’s when we’ll draw out connection and more of those authentic, in-between moments that capture the true essence of your dynamic together.
Trust me, once you get lost in each other’s eyes, the camera will fade, and I’ll turn ino a mere background player simply documenting your connection.
Going for Candid, Authentic Moments
When the time comes to step into those stunning desert scenes, I’ll encourage you to focus on one another instead of the lens. This approach will yield those candid, documentary-style photos that you’ll treasure forever. The joy of an authentic connection will shine far brighter than any forced smiles or posed stances.
I’ll draw on inspiration from movies that you’ve seen, as well. Cue for cinematic moments, for sure!
Whether you’re playfully twirling each other or strolling hand-in-hand, softly brushing your hand along their waist or chest, giving each other soft smiles or going for a little kiss- my aim is to capture the organic essence of your relationship in a light and engaging way.
Ultimately, your engagement session is more than just a photo opp—it’s an experience to celebrate your love and commitment to each other. Joshua Tree is a treasure trove of picturesque spots that promises to amplify the beauty of your relationship through stunning imagery.
So, are you ready to embark on this journey together? Let’s collaborate to make the most of your engagement session! Reach out anytime to book your slot or ask questions as you plan your adventure in Joshua Tree!
I can’t wait to tell your love story through my lens, capturing those priceless, real moments that reflect who you are as a couple. Remember: relax, enjoy each other, and let’s create some magic together in the gorgeous California desert! 🎉✨
Happy planning, and see you in Joshua Tree!
